A Mi-8 helicopter over-flys a BMP-1. The ‘Hip’ was a transport aircraft, but could easily be used as a gunship as well. In the early years of Soviet operations in Afghanistan, helicopters were used with brutal efficiency against the Afghan rebels, but the introduction of Stinger missiles by the United States proved to be an effective counter, forcing the Soviet gunships to operate at a much higher altitude, and limiting their use.
