In a grisly echo of the purges that heralded the beginning of the Civil War over 20 years prior, the Nationalists carry out executions in Shanghai as the PLA forces close in during April and May of 1949. Not only suspected communists were targeted, but nearly any citizen who dared speak out about the untenability of the situation that spring could face such retribution. Despite this show of fanaticism  the city itself well with minimal fight, and in the wake many Nationalist officers chose suicide rather than capture. With the fall of the city, Chiang flew from the mainland to Taiwan, while the government relocated to Canton.
